Bridget Jones may be neurotic, absurd and mired in patriarchy, but she’s a hell of a lot more fun than any black coffee-glugging, Marx-bothering Sally Rooney heroine. The third film, 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby” (which followed the 2004 sequel, “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason”) was enjoyable enough, but it left me feeling as though I’d filled my plate one too many times at a delicious but overstuffed buffet. (It is also a truth universally acknowledged that a piece of writing mentioning Bridget Jones or any Jane Austen adaptation must contain the phrase “it is a truth universally acknowledged,” so that’s out of the way). Bridget Jones changed that. The most disappointing thing about Bridget Jones was always the reaction to her, especially Renée Zellweger’s portrayal.

Strasdin manages to deftly flesh out her narrative by drawing upon newspaper articles, censuses, ship manifests, etiquette guides, surviving letters and contemporary literature. More impressive still is the fact that she conducted the bulk of her research remotely during the pandemic, which limited her to online sources. Strasdin’s detailed explication of Victorian-era dress is sure to delight the fashion history enthusiast, but “The Dress Diary” has much wider appeal. It is a work of sociology, and a testament to fashion history as an inherently interdisciplinary field inextricably combining industry and aesthetics, technology and trade. This diary serves as a record of their very existence, and provides a glimpse into the ephemeral world inhabited by the unsung “participants in everyday life.”

CNN —Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the immediate “partial mobilization” of Russian citizens on Wednesday, a move that threatens to escalate his faltering invasion of Ukraine following a string of defeats that caused recriminations in Moscow. The UK and the US reacted to Putin's speech by saying it points to Russian failure. Ukraine recently repulsed some of Russia's forces, retaking large swathes of territory. Putin announced a mobilization of army reservists towards his war in Ukraine early Wednesday Moscow time, breaking an earlier commitment not to and amping up his warlike rhetoric. He accused parts of the West — which has been supplying weapons and expertise in the defense of Ukraine — of trying to destroy Russia. Putin's threats and broken promises are "an admission his invasion is failing," UK Defense Minister Ben Wallace wrote in a statement moments after the speech.
